Dr. Joey Weber
(PhD, FdA, FHEA)
Faculty | Lecturer | Author

Dr Joey developed and validated one of world’s first psychometric scales that solely focuses on the construct of equanimity – The Equanimity Barriers Scale [EBS] in 2018. His research (spanning 6 years) includes operational definitions of inner and outer equanimity relevant for clinical psychology, theoretical models of judgement and the validation of the EBS. He has recently published a book entitled ‘Why Mindfulness is not Enough: Unlocking Compassion with Equanimity’, which is an overview of his research and includes case studies and guided meditations in order to bring equanimity down from the mystical and into the lap of the practical.

Dr. Joey Weber’s lifelong exploration of equanimity began in a Tibetan monastic community where, as a child, he was introduced to the concepts of mindfulness and equanimity. His fascination with these teachings inspired his academic journey, culminating in a PhD on barriers to equanimity. This means he is one of the world’s first scientists to examine equanimity through a Western scientific lens, establishing new pathways to understanding this essential quality. These early experiences deeply shaped his worldview and professional pursuits, driving him to bridge Eastern philosophical traditions with Western science.

Currently, Dr. Weber is the programme lead on the Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care at the University of Greater Manchester. He also works as a mindfulness consultant, trainer and speaks about equanimity across the globe. His acclaimed book, Why Mindfulness Is Not Enough: Unlocking Compassion with Equanimity, has been translated into Dutch and Italian. This book offers a rich blend of case studies, guided meditations, and practical techniques to enhance mental health and foster equanimity.
